How is the safety and quality of feeds assured?
Skretting has a unique, global feed-to-food quality and safety system (Nutrace®). To ensure consistency throughout the production process from ingredients to final feeds, there are five key areas of our Nutrace® system:
1. Certified Quality and Food Safety
Skretting Australia a number of long standing food safety and quality certifications including:
- ISO9001 Quality Management System;
- Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standard;
- FeedSafe ® the stock feed manufacturer’s standard
- Full traceability – Nutrace®
- Global G.A.P. Compound Feed Manufacturer certification (GNN: 4052852637961)
2. Ingredient and Supplier Assessment and Management
Only approved feed ingredients and suppliers are used by Skretting Australia. Any new suppliers must be evaluated and approved before being considered a supplier to any Skretting operation.
3. Monitoring and Control
Every ingredient has a unique nutritional profile and each ingredient will vary from batch to batch. In order to formulate the precise nutritional value of each of our feeds, every batch of ingredients that are delivered to our factory is scanned using Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) technology. The speed, simplicity and accuracy of NIR technology ensures our customers receive consistent, high quality feeds, no matter which ingredients are in their feed.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) sets maximum residue limits (MRLs) in food and animal ingredients in Australia. The APVMA provides guidelines to ensure that the levels do not pose an undue hazard to human health.
Skretting Australia conducts regular testing of our ingredients and feeds for undesirable substances. Potential residues of undesirable substances such as PCB’s and dioxins, pesticides and heavy metals are regularly reviewed by risk assessment, which considers the scale of use, toxicity and persistence of each compound. Testing is conducted by approved, accredited laboratories.
Residue results for Skretting Australia’s undesirable residues are summarised and reported in our annual Residue Report found on our website.
4. Risk Management
Should a food safety emergency arise, a professional crisis handling system is in place to ensure correct decisions are taken in order to minimise risks and unwanted situations to be handled in a correct manner. It also includes media management and a product recall procedure. Regular training and tests are undertaken by Skretting Australia to ensure we are all well prepared to handle a crisis in an effective and appropriate manner.
5. Tracking and Tracing
An electronic system is in place to ensure the efficient information flow between Skretting Australia, our suppliers of ingredients, fish farmers and fish buyers. This system precisely traces feed batches back to their individual ingredients. It provides accurate and accessible records of all ingredients, production processes and feed deliveries. It also delivers rapid upstream and downstream information, which is essential for efficient information gathering and a recall program in the event of an incident.
