HTO2 – Advanced nutrition for an increasingly warming Mediterranean

The warming of the Mediterranean Sea poses a challenge for aquaculture. When water temperatures reach high levels, they put the health and growth of marine species at risk.

HTO2 helps fish meet this challenge. The result? Better growth in the most demanding conditions.

HTO2: a nutritional solution against heat stress

At Skretting, we propose the functional HTO2 diet, specifically designed to help these species cope with the effects of extreme heat and hypoxia. This diet, available since 2018, is based on three fundamental pillars:

1. Improve oxygen availability: HTO2 promotes the production of red blood cells, optimizing oxygen uptake in low concentration conditions.

2. Restore intestinal structure: High temperatures cause the intestinal walls to become more permeable and less efficient. HTO2 helps maintain its integrity and functionality.

3. Strengthen the antioxidant system: Thanks to its high content of fat-soluble antioxidants, HTO2 protects fish from oxidative stress associated with heat.

Trials carried out by Skretting have shown that HTO2 improves the performance of sea bass when water temperatures exceed 24-25°C, as is already the case in many areas of the Mediterranean this year. Under these conditions, the use of HTO2 allows the growth and health of the fish to be maintained, even when dissolved oxygen drops below 4 mg/L.
