Does aquafeed contain chemicals or preservatives that are dangerous to human health?

No.Aquaculture feeds are subject to strict controls to ensure that they do not pose any threat to human health. The preservatives used must comply with the laws and regulations governing their use.

Because we take the potential contamination of our food very seriously, Skretting has a comprehensive global quality programme, whereby we monitor the presence of unwanted substances in raw materials and food.

The animal feed industry is subject to extremely strict limitations in order to ensure that the feed is not hazardous to human or animal health or the environment. In aquaculture, feed is closely monitored in terms of raw materials, production conditions, and other additives (including preservatives) that can be used to make fish or shrimp safer from a health and hygiene point of view, and to improve other characteristics.

The preservatives used in feed are the same as those used in most products intended for human consumption. As such, they are subject to thorough security assessments before being distributed. To ensure an independent, science-based approach, these assessments generally fall within the purview of national and federal agencies such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
