Addressing climate change

According to the United Nations, climate change is a defining issue of our time. As the planet's population, economies, and living standards grow, so does the cumulative level of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The most abundant greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2). The concentration of GHGs in the Earth's atmosphere is directly related to the Earth's global average temperature. Because CO2 stays in the atmosphere for centuries or even longer, the sooner we curb emissions, the better our chances of limiting temperature rise.

Science-based targets

Skretting, as part of Nutreco, has joined the global ranks of 850 other leading companies by signing a letter of commitment to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI), which states that we will work to set a science-based carbon emission reduction target. A global collaboration between CDP, the World Resources Institute, the World Wide Fund for Nature and the United Nations Global Compact, the SBTI promotes the setting of science-based targets to boost the competitive advantage of companies in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Operations & KPIs

On a quarterly basis, we track, record and report on five key environmental and social performance indicators of the manufacturing process. We started in 2016 and now all production plants report through our financial reporting systems. We continue to strive to improve and share best practices from our different operations.

All Skretting manufacturing plants have a waste management plan. Such a plan should ensure that waste is recycled wherever possible and not landfilled.

Our presence is constantly evolving, with new production facilities under construction and plant closures or expansions underway in most regions.

Deforestation

At Skretting, we want to ensure that we only buy plant ingredients that have been grown by farmers who have not contributed to deforestation, thus protecting sensitive ecosystems and endangered species. In practical terms, this requires our procurement teams to have clear sourcing guidelines, including criteria for how plants are grown.

Our footprint

Aquafeeds play an essential role in ensuring the health and welfare of farmed fish and prawns and can significantly improve the efficiency of aquaculture processes. While progress has been made in optimizing aquafeed efficiency, they also contribute to environmental impact.

With ingredients contributing the most to our footprint, our purchasing team is focused on minimising the impact wherever possible.

Circularity

The circular economy offers many potential solutions to meet climate mitigation goals. One of our fundamental long-term visions is to use ingredients that would not otherwise be consumed by society.

As a result of decades of R+D, Skretting is becoming more flexible with the inclusion of raw materials, allowing limited responsibly sourced available raw materials such as fishmeal to go much further than in the past, thus increasing the sustainability credentials of aquaculture production globally.

Our current use of food ingredients globally is made up of more than 20% by-products. These can include ingredients made from by-products of the human food processing chain that would otherwise be wasted if not used in the feed industry. In addition, we are using increasing volumes of ingredients that do not compete with human consumption, such as insect meals, proteins from single-celled organisms, and cultured algae products. The use of these ingredients represents an efficient use of natural resources and supports the development of a circular economy.
