that are designed to help farmers boost productivity, support animal health and minimise
negative environmental impacts, and by doing so we address three UN SDGs (sustainable development goals).

Good health and well-being

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a serious health concern that is predicted to overtake cancer as the leading cause of death by 2050. Skretting offers nutritional solutions that help farmers reduce their reliance on antibiotics without impacting growth.

Responsible consumption and production

Feeds are a major source of the economic and environmental costs associated with animal production. Skretting offers a range of Nutritional Solutions which help fish and shrimp farmers to reduce these costs by enabling them to produce more from less. 

Life below water

As the population grows, so does the demand for seafood. Per capita consumption has doubled from the 1960s until now. This rapid expansion could increase pressure on wild fish resources, which have been a major source of vital nutrients in aquafeeds. After years of research at Skretting ARC, we are now able to produce fish meal-free diets. 

Through the development of nutritional solutions, Skretting can make a significant contribution to making livestock production and aquaculture more sustainable. We focus on four innovation areas: Life start, animal Health & welfare, Feed efficiency, and Precision farming. 

Efficient use of limited marine resources

Commonly used as ingredients in aquaculture feeds, marine raw materials like fish meal and fish oil are finite in supply. Skretting’s groundbreaking MicroBalance® technology is enabling the aquaculture industry to grow without putting additional pressure on wild fisheries. MicroBalance has helped Skretting to significantly reduce the minimum fish meal levels in our diets. Today, for example, we are able to make salmon diets completely independent of fishmeal. We are also exploring ways in which this innovative nutritional technology can be used to find alternatives to fish oil in our diets.

The nutritional technology within the MicroBalance concept enables Skretting to be increasingly flexible with regards to its feed formulations, thus allowing a reduction in the dependency on critical raw materials. At the same time, it ensures that ingredient substitution can be done without reduction of fish performance (growth, feed conversion, health and flesh quality).

Securing animal health

Many aquaculture systems are open to the natural environment, which exposes fish and shrimp stocks to stresses such as extreme temperatures, handling and a range of parasites and diseases that can lead to negative health impacts. Skretting is committed to helping farmers secure animal health through continued investment in R&D, which helps to improve the sustainability of production by maintaining a high level of animal welfare as well as increasing the efficiency of production.

The result from more than 20 years of research, our Protec products help protect the skin, intestine and gills of aquaculture species. They support immune systems, add the building blocks for new cells and increase the level of antioxidants. Documented evidence shows Protec enables species to better cope with the challenge of being exposed to viruses, parasites and pathogenic bacteria.

Optimising on-farm performance

Although feed formulation plays a key role in determining the efficiency of feed utilisation, it is also influenced by several environmental and physiological conditions. Years of research have provided Skretting with an excellent understanding of the interaction between these factors, as well as the ability to match specific feeds to local conditions.

To help our customers choose feeds that best suit their unique situations, Skretting developed the unique modelling tool AquaSim. AquaSim consists of a suite of mathematical models that combine data from research trials with operational costs and feed prices to calculate the costs and benefits of using different Skretting feeds under defined environmental and physiological conditions. This allows farmers to select a product mix that delivers optimum on-farm performance and return on investment.

The associated efficiency gains also have positive sustainability outcomes for society as they allow for more food for human consumption to be produced without increasing the burden on natural resources.
