Skretting’s commitment to aquaculture sustainability starts with us,
ensuring our own house is in order

We strive to minimise the negative impacts of our direct operations and create valuable
employment opportunities for the communities in which we operate. These efforts directly
address three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Decent work and economic growth

Productive employment and decent work are key elements to achieving sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction. At Skretting we provide employees with a safe and secure working environment through the implementation of HSE Standards as well as our Code of Ethics which clearly outlines our zero tolerance approach to discrimination and child labour.

Responsible consumption and production

Our production plants consume natural resources including water and non-renewable fuels. We also produce some undesirable wastes and emissions. To ensure our operations remain sustainable we have implemented a rigorous system of data collection and reporting for 4 environmental KPIs – energy, GHG, water and waste. This data is used to monitor the performance of our operating sites to identify opportunities for sustainable production and consumption.

Climate action

The United Nations Paris Agreement on climate change entered into force in 2016. This sets a global action plan to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to below 2°C. To meet this ambitious target governments, business and society need to work together to reduce emissions. Skretting is working to reduce our own footprint through improvements to energy efficiency and shifting to energy sources that are less emissions intensive.

Under the Nuterra programme, we focus on the monitoring and recording of five sustainability KPIs. For each of these we set targets and discuss results quarterly, so that we actively work towards meeting these targets.

Water icon

We lower withdrawals from local water sources by increasing productivity per water input, reducing wastewater discharges and their pollutant load, and reducing thermal energy consumption.

Energy icon

We make smarter decisions about using newer, more energy efficient equipment and processes in our factories.

Health & safety icon

We monitor our health and safety performance by registering work accidents and by continuously improving the safety of our work environment.

Waste icon

We aim to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by recycling and reusing as much as possible. We also focus on reducing the amount of products we purchase that cannot bereused or recycled.

We continuously investigate options to change our energy sources to more sustainable options.
