Therese Log Bergjord: Why Skretting will be at COP25

Climate change is the defining issue of our time and we stand at a crucial crossroads. While the growing global understanding of the implications of rapid climatic shifts has strengthened the emotional connection between people and planet, it also emphasises the need to take urgent action to address these threats.

With oceans particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change, potentially limiting their long-term ability to provide food security and incomes to many millions of people, Skretting has prioritised attendance at the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP25, being held in December in Madrid, Spain. Attending from Skretting will be R&D Director Dr Alex Obach, Marketing Director Anita Viga, and Sophie Noonan, Global Communications Manager. In addition, Nutreco Sustainability Director José Villalón will participate in several events during COP25.

Through our mission of ‘Feeding the Future’, Skretting is committed to progressing the sustainability of the aquaculture value chain and to provide the pathways by which it can meet the increasing nutritional needs of a world population that will reach almost 10 billion people by 2050. COP25 is the ideal opportunity to engage with other business leaders from across multiple sectors and regions, as well as government representatives, and key members from the scientific, social and NGO communities to build a greater holistic understanding of the most pressing issues and the most effective courses of action to date.

Climate change is a global challenge that affects every life, and that means we all have reason to act. COP25 will provide the opportunity to meet many inspiring people and organisations, so while I fully intend for our colleagues to share Skretting’s own insights and experiences of climate change and to talk frankly about what we are already doing to mitigate the potential impacts, we are going there with eyes wide open to learn more about the bigger picture. I believe that by proactively taking part in conversations that transcend the aquaculture sector, we can be even more ambitious in our future strategies and make much greater, more meaningful contributions.
