Involving people in the challenge of 'Feeding the Future'

At Skretting we believe a sustainable future is not viable without the involvement of motivated people. Therefore we are actively engaged with internal and external stakeholders to achieve common sustainability goals. This addresses two United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Decent work and economic growth

Most population growth over the coming decades is predicted to occur in emerging markets. In order for them to achieve the productivity gains required to feed these additional mouths, they need access to the technology and know-how that has enabled farmers in the developed world to produce more from less. We are helping to bridge this gap by investing in community development projects focused on capacity building for small scale farmers in emerging markets.

Partnerships for the goals

Given the scale of the sustainability challenges facing the world, it is impossible to achieve progress in isolation. This can only be achieved if partnerships are formed between all segments of society including business, government, NGOs and communities. Collaboration is part of our company values at Skretting and Nutreco and this can been seen through our long term involvment in external partnerships and multistakeholder platforms. This includes our biannual Agri and AquaVision conferences as well as the Pincoy Project in Chile, the Seafood Business Ocean Stewardship, and our community development projects in Nigeria and Indonesia.

Our nutritional solutions include a wide variety of ingredients sourced from all over the world. We can only develop sustainable nutritional solutions if we are part of a responsible supply chain.

Community development

Many farmers in developing markets are smallholders, using basic agriculture and aquaculture methods. An important challenge in feeding a growing world population in a sustainable way is to improve the productivity and sustainability of their farming methods.

In local community development programmes, we team up with local governments, NGOs, universities and other companies to share our knowledge and expertise. Current programmes include a project in Nigeria where we are helping to raise the livelihoods of up to 1,000 small catfish farmers and a project in Indonesia involving up to 1,000 small dairy farmers.
