Skretting Italy is certified according to ASC's new feed standard Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Standard 1.01 which addresses one of the biggest potential impacts of aquaculture – namely the production and supply of feed for farmed fish.

In accordance with this new standard, which sets strict requirements for both environmental and social considerations for responsible feed production, we document that the ingredients come from socially responsible suppliers, and that they are environmentally friendly raw materials, all according to ASC Feed Standard 1.01.

Feed production in a sustainable way for the environment and people
The ASC builds on the principles of responsible aquaculture (aquaculture) and extends this to also apply to the feed factories and their suppliers in this feed standard. These requirements reassures our farmed fish producers and consumers who eat the fish that the feed used in ASC-certified fish farms is responsibly produced – whether it contains marine or land-based ingredients.

What does the ASC food standard entail?
The ASC feed standard sets clear requirements that certified feed factories must increase the use of environmentally sustainable ingredients. Marine ingredients now make up around a quarter of our feed, and the rest comes largely from agriculture – such as rapeseed, soy, wheat and guar. These plant-based ingredients have their own environmental impacts, particularly related to deforestation and land-use change, which we at Skretting take very seriously.

For plant-based ingredients, as for marine ingredients, according to the standard, we will report on all that make up more than 1 percent of the feed, and we take the necessary steps to ensure that they come from responsible value chains. We assess the risk that certain ingredients may contribute to deforestation or land-use change, and we are committed to using supply chains that avoid such negative impacts.

Deforestation- and conversion-free (DCF) supply chains
Skretting Italy requires that all our Brazilian soy suppliers must have a value chain that is completely deforestation- and conversion-free with a cut-off date of December 2020. Something we consider necessary to stop the ongoing deforestation in Brazil. We do this because we realize that we have a responsibility to avoid contributing to deforestation and damage to the environment.

Securing ASC-certified food for the future
From October 2025, farms producing in accordance with ASC schemes will only be able to use feed produced in feed mills certified to the ASC feed standard.
