Skretting Becomes First in Australia to Earn ASC Feed Certification

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is proud to announce a significant milestone for Australia’s aquaculture industry: Skretting has become the first aquafeed producer in the country to earn certification under the ASC Feed Standard.

Skretting has achieved certification for its Cambridge and Westbury feed mill facilities in Tasmania, following a comprehensive, independent audit against the ASC Feed Standard conducted by Conformity Assessment Body (CAB), bio.inspecta.

Skretting’s certified facilities supply aquafeed for species such as Atlantic Salmon, Chinook Salmon, Barramundi, Yellowtail Kingfish, and Black Tiger Prawn, key contributors to Australia’s seafood economy.

This landmark achievement reinforces Skretting’s position as a global leader in responsible feed production and sets a new benchmark for sustainability, transparency, and ethical practices in aquaculture.

“This milestone is much more than a compliance exercise,” said Melissa Abbott, General Manager of Skretting Australia. “It reaffirms our deep commitment to sustainable feed production for our partners and consumers alike. We are committed to leading the industry with integrity and purpose, and this marks an important step forward on that journey.”

For retailers, this means reduced supply chain risk, greater traceability, and alignment with consumer demand for responsibly sourced seafood. Skretting’s achievement shows how the sector is embracing positive change. It sets a high benchmark for others to follow.

Responsibly Sourced Seafood - Why Feed Matters

The ASC Feed Standard offers assurance to retailers and buyers that aquafeed used in ASC certified seafood production meets the highest international standards for environmental stewardship and social responsibility.

The ASC Feed Standard reduces operational risk by requiring responsible sourcing of raw materials, not only marine ingredients, but also major agricultural crops such as soy, wheat, corn, and canola. The standard addresses social impacts too, safeguarding labour rights, worker safety, and community wellbeing across the feed supply chain.

“Certification helps us, and our partners identify and mitigate risks together, a critical part of ensuring a sustainable future for aquaculture,” said Jorge Diaz, Skretting’s Global Sustainability and Communications Director. “Skretting Australia is our tenth operating company to achieve ASC certification, further demonstrating our global commitment to raising the bar on accountability and transparency.”

About the ASC Feed Standard

Launched in June 2021 and effective from January 2023, the ASC Feed Standard represents a transformative, holistic approach to sustainable aquafeed. It tackles both environmental and social challenges, from deforestation and biodiversity loss to human rights violations, ensuring that feed inputs are responsibly sourced and traceable.

The standard directly responds to the growing global demand for transparency and ethical sourcing in aquaculture, driving improvements not just in feed production but across the entire seafood value chain.

Looking Ahead

Skretting’s ASC certification arrives at a crucial time for the global seafood industry. As consumers, retailers, and regulators demand more responsible practices, certified feed mills like Skretting’s are playing a vital role in transforming the sector from the ground up.

“Skretting is not only advancing its own operations, it’s helping elevate the entire aquaculture industry toward a more sustainable and resilient future,” said Ellie Dixon.
