Importance of seed selection in shrimp farming

Seed selection, also known as broodstock selection, is a critical aspect of shrimp farming that significantly impacts the success and productivity of the operation. 70% of the shrimp farming success depends on the quality of the seed what we stock. Here are some key reasons why seed selection is important in shrimp farming:

  1. It reduces the risk of crop failure
    • High resistance to stressful conditions during and after shifting from hatchery to Nursery / grow-out ponds
    • High survival and better growth
  2. Approach CAA approved and reputed shrimp hatcheries with maturation units for seed selection
  3. Preferably stock PL 13 (4+ rostral spines)
  4. Clean and complete body & appendages without any fouling or necrosis.
  5. Healthy hepatopancreas with fine lipid droplet and no infections
  6. Pass all the tests
    • PCR result negative for WSSV with cold challenge
    • PCR result negative for EHP
    • Microbiology result (TCBS) Green colony – 0CFU & Yellow colony < 50 CFU
    • Salinity stress test
    • Formaldehyde stress test
  7. Healthy hepatopancreas with fine lipid droplet and no infections
  8. Microbiology (TCBS-Vibrio) Green- 0 CFU & Yellow < 50 CFU
