As one of the world’s largest aquafeed producers, Skretting is on an ambitious path to feeding close to 10 billion people by 2050, in a safe, healthy, and sustainable way. The Impact Report for 2024 documents the great progress that was made across its global operations and marks the launch of a new sustainability value proposition.

However, during 2024 it has also been clear that one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today is maintaining our social license. In a bid to build and maintain trust across the entire value chain, Skretting aspires every year to publish its most transparent report ever, celebrating its achievements, while reflecting honestly on what can be improved. This year is no exception.

“At Skretting, we are committed to being the absolute best at innovation, customer intimacy, and sustainability. Our achievements in 2024 show that we are serious about leading in these areas. I am proud of what we have accomplished together,” says Bastiaan van Tilburg, CEO of Skretting.

The numbers reflect progress

On greenhouse gas emission reductions Skretting reveals not just global numbers in 2024, but also details for all business units, with even greater granularity for each country in its salmon business (Australia, Chile, North America and Norway). Reductions on all three scopes are reported for 2024, compared to baseline numbers in 2018. Scope 1 and 2 saw reductions of 34.9%, and scope 3 saw reductions of 10.2%. In the same timeframe, Skretting was also able to reduce the average carbon footprint per tonne of feed by 26%.

Skretting also discloses its use of antibiotics, including how much are used, where they are used, and why. Since 2021, a 5% decrease in the use of critically important antimicrobials for human medicine (CIA) and a 53% decrease in the use of non-CIA is reported. The percentage of total feed containing antibiotics was 1.4% in 2024, a decrease from 1.6% in 2023. There was also progress on the use of certified marine ingredients, which went from 77% in 2023 to 85% in 2024.

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) is a priority at Skretting, and in 2024, 27% of all senior leaders in the organisation were female. A dedicated D&I Council has worked activeley to drive inclusivity in the workplace. Amongst its many initiatives, the D&I Council has supported feedback culture and promoted equality especially among the less visible and more vulnerable members of the Skretting community.

At Skretting, we are committed to being the absolute best at innovation, customer intimacy, and sustainability. Our achievements in 2024 show that we are serious about leading in these areas. I am proud of what we have accomplished together.

An eventful year with sustainability in focus

In 2024, Skretting’s parent company Nutreco celebrated the opening of Nutreco’s Garden of the Future in Thurgau, Switzerland. This is where proprietary plant ingredients called PhytoComplexes are developed, which are being incorporated into Skretting feed to create groundbreaking solutions to address some of the most pressing health challenges for fish and shrimp.

As one of the industry’s most pressing needs is to find alternative sources of EPA and DHA, Skretting has also developed a Skretting Novel Ingredient Matrix to help it evaluate its suppliers. Three important criteria have been identified: Sustainability, ingredient performance and supplier capabilities.

In the same spirit of responsible sourcing, seven of Skretting’s factories have achieved the ASC Feed Certification, being first movers in the salmon industry, as well as in the EU, Ecuador and Japan. This standard demands the stricter requirements for traceability, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility.

Co-creating change with ACT

Sustainability is about taking actions that drive real change while creating long-term value. That is why Skretting chooses to launch its new sustainability value proposition ACT together with its Impact Report 2024.

ACT stands for Action (doing what matters most and with impact), Connection (involving the right stakeholders to accelerate change), and Transparency (being a trusted advisor and providing the right information). It was designed with Skretting customers in mind, to help them achieve their desired sustainability ambitions in the markets where they operate. Through ACT, Skretting is leading the way in co-creating sustainable solutions that benefit suppliers, farmers, and the entire industry.

A commitment for generations to come

"Our purpose is Feeding the Future, and in 2024 we contributed to 24 million portions of seafood meals per day around the world. However, we need to do more to help the industry reach its full growth potential. If we don’t deliver on this, global food security will be in jeopardy,” says van Tilburg. “That’s why we invite our partners in the industry to embrace long-term thinking and collaboration to secure investment, innovation and progress in sustainability.

We commit that, together with the teams in all our regions, Skretting will play a leading role and help aquaculture reach its full potential."
