Rem Korteweg, Program lead, Geopolitics of Trade
Rem Korteweg leads the ‘Geopolitics of Trade Programme’ and the ‘United States Programme’ at the Clingendael Institute in The Hague. He works on issues at the intersection of trade, foreign policy and security and has an interest in the impact of geopolitics on economic globalisation. His current research focuses on European trade and industrial policy, economic security, critical materials policy, and the future of transatlantic trade and security affairs.
He is an associate fellow in the Global Economy and Finance programme at Chatham House. Until 2017 Rem was a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform (CER) in London. In 2012, he was posted at the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs as strategic policy advisor. From 2006 until 2007, he was a Fulbright scholar at Johns Hopkins-SAIS in Washington DC. Rem holds a PhD in International Relations from Leiden University.
He is a regular contributor to various international and national media and has published in a variety of newspapers and journals. He is co-author of the recent book "The Impact of Geopolitics: How companies determine their strategy" (2025).
