What really goes into producing feed?
Producing aquaculture feed brings together nutritional knowledge, approved raw materials, manufacturing processes, quality controls and delivery. Here, we explain how a feed formulation becomes a finished product.
Developing the feed formulation
Feed formulations are developed to meet the nutritional requirements of the species and life stage. Product specifications, ingredient characteristics, regulatory requirements and intended production conditions all inform the formulation.
Selecting approved raw materials
Raw materials and suppliers must complete an approval process before use. The assessment considers the ingredient, source and intended use, including relevant quality, safety, regulatory and traceability requirements. Environmental and social sourcing requirements are addressed through our responsible sourcing policies and supplier standards.
Producing the feed
Ingredients are received, stored, weighed, ground and mixed according to the formulation. The mixture is processed into feed with the required physical characteristics for the product. Controls during production are used to manage parameters such as ingredient identity, dosing, process conditions and pellet quality.
Quality checks and delivery
Finished feed is assessed against relevant specifications before release. Checks vary by product and site and may include nutritional, physical, microbiological and contaminant parameters. Released products are then packed or loaded for transport by boat or truck, in bags or through bulk delivery. Batch information supports traceability through dispatch and delivery.
