From approval to testing
New raw materials and suppliers must complete an approval process before purchasing begins. The assessment considers the ingredient, source and intended use, including relevant quality, safety, regulatory and traceability requirements. Approved materials must meet defined specifications, and suppliers provide documentation to support the assessment.
Laboratory testing and near-infrared spectroscopy help us assess characteristics such as moisture, protein and fat against product specifications. Depending on the ingredient and identified risks, testing may also cover pathogens and selected contaminants. The testing programme can reflect factors such as supplier history, country of origin and intended use, with additional checks where findings or changing conditions require follow-up.
Controls throughout production
Quality and safety controls continue as ingredients are stored, weighed, ground, mixed and processed into feed. Production teams monitor relevant parameters such as ingredient identity, dosing, process conditions and pellet quality. Finished feed is assessed against applicable specifications before release.
Traceability and continuous improvement
Batch records connect received ingredients with production and delivery information. If an irregularity is identified, these records support investigation, follow-up and, where required, product withdrawal or recall.
Approved ingredients, suppliers and production processes remain subject to monitoring. Findings from testing, audits, supplier reviews and production controls are assessed and followed up through the relevant procedures. Requirements and controls are updated as regulations, specifications, risks and operating practices evolve.
Next: The future of feed
As a responsible global business, Skretting has long recognised that we must innovate to enable aquaculture and seafood supply chains to keep pace with the food demands of a fast-growing population. This must be done in the most pro-planet manner possible, with a strong focus on the protection of endangered species and sensitive ecosystems. What is our plan for the future?
